I'm curious to know which is more commonly used. I know some games come in one or the other for their default, but which do you personally prefer and why?

I prefer first-person over third. I cannot stand third-person shooters... first-person feels so much more realistic and enjoyable actually seeing your weapon and the point of view you would experience in real combat. If Gears had an FPS option I might actually play it more than the two times I did a few years ago.

I believe FPS, because third person doesn't give me the "excitement" that a first person does. I feel like, whenever I play a FPS- not even in standard shooters like MW or COD; but also games like: F.E.A.R., Dead Island, ETC. shuttle a lot of suspense my way. In a third person, I feel you have more of an "advantage," and it takes away from the suspense.

I 100% agree.
I like the point about F.E.A.R. especially. It wouldn't be nearly as nerve-wracking if played over-the-shoulder in third-person.

I have the same thoughs about third-person. You don't see down your sights like first-person. For this reason I don't like Gears of War, Warhammer, or any other games similar to those, and that's aside from the fact that it's futuristic weapons and gear as well.

Yeah, futuristic weapons don't have that "familiar" feel; they feel kind of sloppy. Realistic guns have that nice hard precise shot to it.

Well, that and I don't like how they made some of the futuristic weapons laser shots instead of actual bullets. To me it kind of takes away from the gun when it's not bullets.

A game that is a bit futuristic I enjoy is Borderlands with its 10 million or however many different gun combinations... very exciting looting enemies and pulling out an awesome 20 round, 1 shot kill acid shotty... but at the same time you have a chance of pulling out a shitty rusty gun.

Haha! Yeah, those are the kinds of games that I actually just prefer to watch instead of play.

Definitely! And that's the reason I don't like third-person, but then I do know some people who prefer third-person.

meh... 3rd person is cool every once in a while but only for fun... like I will play it for resident evil and I played 3rd person on COD a couple times but only for a change of pace
